When applied properly, the variable frequency drive (VFD) is an effective motor controller. Modern VFDs are affordable and reliable, have flexibility of control and significant reduce motor energy consumption.

HVAC APPLICATIONS

VDFs are ideal in HVAC applications. They are effective energy savers in pump and fan applications and enhance process operations, particularly where flow control is involved. VFDs provide soft-start capabilities, which decrease electrical stresses and line voltage sags associated with full voltage motor start-ups, especially when driving high-inertia loads.

National Grid and NSTAR have regional energy initiatives to install energy-efficient Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) in new construction, renovation, and failed equipment replacement. These programs provide end user rebates when installing VFDs that reduces load demands on the grid when powering AC motors and allow them to operate more efficiency.  Approval is required prior to installation.  Application forms can be found by visiting their National Grid and NSTAR websites .
